Growth – stretching your edge of comfort

I just got back from a two-week trip to Australia. My husband had a work conference, and I got to tag along. So much gratitude for the experience!

It was a great trip filled with many memorable moments. We stayed in Sydney for the first few days. Walked the coast – it was a 3-hour walk starting at Coogee beach and ended at Bondi Beach. It felt very Mediterranean. When we got to Bondi Beach we put our feet in the very cold sea water which felt great after walking so long. We headed to lunch at an outdoor cafe where the owner told us just a few days before there was Great White Shark attack in shallow water on Coogee Beach where a local woman lost her arm! I’m glad we didn’t go swimming there.

At that same café, we met a local bird species that felt like we were back in the Jurassic age – the Australian White Ibis. Funny and friendly birds. They’re so ugly they're cute! They were everywhere.

Here it is walking on the back of the bench I was sitting on. A little trivia...they are called "bin chickens" in Australia because they have learned to adapt to city life and eat "rubbish" (not garbage, but rubbish as they say there).

After a few days in Sydney, we flew northeast to Cairnes for a couple of tours: Great Barrier Reef snorkeling trip one day and the other day was Mossman's Gorge, Daintree Rainforest (oldest living rainforest), and Cape Tribulation. We ate lunch in the rainforest and took a river boat to see crocodiles on the Daintree River. This guy apparently took down a small cow a month ago with only one tooth! He's about 80 years old. Don't want to swim in this river!

In the city of Cairnes, we encountered fruit bats on our walk back to the hotel from dinner one night. They are huge and very noisy!

Then we flew back to Sydney for the rest of the trip.

While in Sydney, we stayed in Chinatown. Our hotel was right across the street from the Chinese Garden of Friendship. I was so excited to see that they had a lunchtime qigong session, so I signed up! That was definitely a highlight!!

Insights and reflections

As I reflect on the trip, there were many moments of stretching my edge of comfort. Doing things I haven’t done before or things that I’m not completely comfortable with: 15 hour non-stop flight or walking over the Sydney Harbor Bridge because I’m afraid of heights, and sightseeing alone in a really big city while my husband was working.

There were also many moments of NOT stretching my edge and letting my fears get in the way: not getting into the water to snorkel and only observing from the boat's lower observation window, not knowing how to order an Uber alone, so I just went where I could walk.

Stretching our edge of comfort is important for us to grow and evolve. It’s our fears that stop us from growing. We must ask ourselves these questions about our fears:

  • Are they real? And we may answer yes. Then we need to ask again, are we certain, do we know our fears will come true?
  • And, are they mine? Are these fears really mine or are they fears of other's, of what I hear and see?

Now, I’m not saying we should ignore our fears. Our fears are there to keep us safe from harmful situations. We should not be foolish and take unnecessary risks. But what about those fears that hold us back from experiencing life? Such as, not wanting to look foolish, irrational fears (heights, bugs, animals, etc.), fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of success. This is where we may want to ask ourselves those questions.

In the Success Codex tool I use, there is a keycode called “Capacity”. It represents our capacity to “hold things” in our life and encourages us to stretch our edge in order to manifest abundance. Stretching our edge not to break, but to grow. You will know your energy is blocked here if you feel you’re at a breaking point or are putting limits on your abundance.

The planet associated with the Capacity keycode is Earth. And Earth is all about grounding oneself and feeling safe. That makes sense, right? If you feel safe to take some chances or get a little uncomfortable, this is where change can happen. Then who knows what exciting and wonderful things will happen! But we must be willing to stretch our edge. How does one know how to do that? Well, we are all unique in this area and we hold Capacity in different ways.

My Capacity keycode is 43.1 = Insight and to stretch my edge of self-trust. This makes sense for me. I need to know all sides of things first and to trust my own thoughts, not those of others. I feel “safe” when I know things, when I know what to expect. Not knowing how to do something, like ordering that Uber kept me from exploring a part of the city that could have been pretty fabulous. This is my keycode, yours will be different. If you have downloaded your free Success Codex chart (you can do that here), look at your Capacity keycode and see if it resonates with you and how you experience growth and your ability to hold more in your life.
